Using a custom list? Then this is for you, otherwise, you don't need to do this. This is for prospects (subscribers who have not purchased) only. For customers, you should follow these instructions.

If you have custom lists where the subscriber did not confirm their opt-in, you will need to re-confirm their marketing consent.

Situations you'll want to reconfirm marketing consent for prospects

  • A person subscribed to your newsletter list using a subscription form on your website but it did not have subscription confirmation switched on (also known as double opt-in).

FAQ:

My business is outside the EU and I have both EU and non-EU subscribers, can I separate out my non-EU subscribers, since this doesn't apply to them?
We don't record the location of subscribers recorded at the time of signup so we can't split them up into groups. You may however be able to split out the customers/subscribers from your store's admin section, but we cannot advise on this.

How to set up reconfirmation for Prospects

Create a new list

  1. Go to Subscribers > Segments & Lists. Scroll to the bottom, to "Your Lists" and click on "Create New List". This will be the new list your customers will confirm to.
  2. Click on "Settings" for your newly created list. You will need to leave "Confirm List Subscription" on, and you may also wish to customise your "Create custom confirmation email".

Make a subscription form and add it to your site

  1. Next, go to Subscribers > Subscription Forms. You will need to create a subscription form for your newly created list.
  2. On your store, create a new page, and add the subscription form to it. Not sure how to add it? Read our setup guide.
  3. Make sure your page is published and make a note of the url, you'll need it for your newsletter.

Create your prospect segment for your list

  1. Go to Subscribers > Segments & Lists and click "Create a new segment" with the following criteria (Number of orders equals 0 and "Has an active subscription"), replacing the list choice with your original list. Ensure you finish by clicking "Create segment"

Create & send a reconfirmation email for your prospects

  1. Create a new newsletter, selecting your custom list(s) that need reconfirming, then choosing your new segment in the "Limit to one of your segments" dropdown. 
  2. Here's some text you could use in your newsletter:

    A while ago you signup up on our website to receive news and information from {{companyName}} and we'd like to know whether you'd still like to continue to hear from us.

    On May 25, 2018, there's a new General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR") coming into effect that affects EU citizens and businesses, so we need to confirm that you would like to receive information from us.

    If you'd like to continue hearing from us, please update your subscription settings, otherwise we'll remove you from our list on May 25.
  3. You should also add a button (try using "Reconfirm Subscription" as the button wording) and link to your new page with the subscription form on.
  4. Now you're set up - time to send your newsletter! You may also want to send a reminder for this too, to ensure maximum impact. After May 25, you'll no longer be able to contact the people on the original list, only the ones who have subscribed to your new list.

Update your subscription forms and popups

You should also update any Conversio subscription forms or popup integrations to subscribe to your new list. To do this, click on the subscription form name to edit the subscription form, then change the list name to the new one.
